Is your child ready to progress into racing on the Welsh circuit? If so please read on for opportunities you should be considering in the next month…
Welsh Zone Championships, Fishguard, 23/24 Sept
Deadline: Registration now open
One of the regions biggest events for all junior sailors including those new to racing, hosted by Fishguard Bay Yacht Club making it a fabulous sea venue this year! As well as a main fleet for more experienced racers, there will be a Regatta Racing fleet offering short courses with coaches helping them get around -they often sail close to shore and come in for lunch. New racers are well looked after making it a fun first event for them to enjoy!
Sailors will need to participate in the Zones to be eligible for RYA Squad places and John Merricks Trust boats.
John Merrick’s Sailing Trust OnBoard Award 2017
A great opportunity to be gifted a brand new boat – for young sailors who don’t already own their own boat and are sailing at a club ! Find out more here, please read all of the page and submit the Declaration of Eligibility. Eligible sailors must enter and compete at the RYA Zone Championships in the year you would like to be selected. Each year, at least one young sailor will be selected from each of the nine RYA Zones and Home Countries giving them two years of exclusive use of their own boat donated to their club or centre, by the Trust. After which the boats will be returned to the sailor’s original club so other young sailors can continue to benefit in the future and progress into club and regional racing activities.
Huw Farmer from our club was very proud to be awarded Optimist 6250 which we will now be awarding another promising junior member! For more details and help with the application process, please contact John Farmer, Will Willett or myself. We’d be happy to provide supporting letter to attest to their skill.
Optimist 6250 Exclusive Loan 2018
If your child is ready to race at LSC events and progress onto the Welsh Optimist circuit then you may benefit from this exciting opportunity! We’d like to award one promising sailor with exclusive use of our ex John Merricks Optimist for 2018! We are looking for a talented young sailor who doesn’t already own a boat (and may not yet be able to buy their own boat), who is willing to race at LSC Junior Club events, CYRCs, Youth & Junior Championships and Zone Championships. For more details and the level of commitment we’re hoping please send Richard McCulloch an expression of interest and request an application form.
RYA Welsh Sailing Squads
Apply: anticipated that the form will be online from Saturday 9th September 2017 http://welshsailingevents.org/welsh-squads-application-home-page/squad-application/
Quite a number of our young club members apply and get into squads each year. It’s a great opportunity to fast track your child’s learning with a full winter of training where a qualified RYA Race Coach will teach racing techniques, boat preparation, physical fitness, and much more. Coaches will also offer on the water support at major events next year. Being part of a squad is a fabulous chance for your young sailors to make some firm sailing friendships with children around the region and fill them with a sense of pride & achievement.
If you’re keen to learn how to race and want to progress further the RYA pathway provides a huge wealth of support for young sailors. In Wales the first step is the regional squad for each junior class (Optimist, Topper etc) which you can apply for each year. This is the first step before moving on to Welsh Zone squads, GBR squads and for some, the Olympic pathway.
