Club of the Week

Sports Wales “Club Solutions” website features Llangorse Sailing Club in article about resilience through the Covid 19 pandemic crisis. The feature came about as we explored the Welsh Government’s support package for sorts clubs. When they heard that we feel we do meet their criteria for “most severe need,” they requested an interview – and this is the result. In the meantime, we are exploring other sources support liaising with local and national government and the RYA.

Message from the Commodore

May 2020
Letter to the membership – and potential members,
Ben Williams, Commodore.

Dear Member,
You will recall that, abiding by the government’s Covid 19 guidelines, we took the unprecedented step of closing the Club site in late March. Many families have been directly affected by the crisis; if you are one of those, my thoughts are with you at this sad time.
It is now timely to share with you our plans to begin to consider when – and how – we might re-open. This I do with great caution. We would not do so without not only the appropriate conditional go-ahead from the authorities, but moreover, we must have the confidence of you, the membership.
We have always been eager to re-activate the club as soon as it is safe and responsible to do. Some good news is that while we have been closed the club-site has recovered from the flooding. Members will be pleased to know that the site, buildings clubhouse, boats and equipment are in good order.
Equally, while we have missed income from training, events and some membership, our finances are stable. I would like to thank all those who have renewed their membership and our recently joined members too – you have helped the club remain resilient. Since the Welsh Government launched the Emergency Resilience Fund at Easter, we have assessed the options of financial support for sports clubs in severe need. You will be pleased to know that – thanks to our capacity to flex-up-and-down our financial activity – including our well-established winter hibernation – the club’s finances are sound. Our priority to sustain ourselves is responsibly to get the Club up-and-running as soon as we can, albeit at a reduced level of activity.
The UK Government is now beginning to suggest that the worst of the pandemic is over and it is time to start to make plans about managing the recovery. Nevertheless we remain cautious. Here in rural Wales we are advised that the progress of the virus is around a fortnight behind some parts of England, we can understand the Welsh Government’s concern about premature action. We will follow Government direction, judgement on this being out of our hands. We are continuing our engagement with the RYA and Welsh Sports Association and the Welsh Government – who have taken on board our observations and recommendations. We will also be working together with the other lake users.
I would like to stress, however, that we will act in our members’ interests putting-first our specific and local concerns. We are aware that our club community contains people of all ages, including some who are deemed to be more vulnerable than others. At the same time, when we do re-open, it will be important that, as individuals, we take responsibility for our own safety and that of those we are likely to meet. We must move forward with care and with consensus. As a team, we are examining how we can establish a way forward which minimises risk yet allows us to resume sailing, training and other activity at the club.

I am aware that this message leaves many questions unanswered. The purpose of this letter has been to reassure you that a responsible process is under-way. As things stand, we can respond to any questions but we may not be able to provide a definitive answer. You are welcome to pose your questions to llangorsesailingclub@gmail.com. We will endeavour to help.
I look forward to seeing you, when it is safe to, on the water sometime soon.
Yours sincerely,
Ben Williams
Commodore
