Junior Sailing Programme

We have a thriving junior & family sailing scene here at the club with lots on offer including RYA training, coaching days, family fun days and junior racing. We want to be the best place for young sailors to learn, have fun and get the most from their sailing.

As an RYA Champion Club, RYA Training Centre and RYA OnBoard club we already offer much for our young sailors but above all we want to be a club where children and families want to keep coming back. As a volunteer led club, we need you to help us by coming along, taking part, helping out and enjoying the club.

In the Training section of this site and in your Membership Pack you'll find information about RYA Training Courses, our famous Cadet Week and Cadet Coaching days. Please also sign up to our Juniors Newsletter, check noticeboards in the clubhouse and ask us for information - we’re always happy to help.

The club provides a route through the RYA Youth & Junior pathway for all young sailors. We have a comprehensive junior sailing programme with RYA training courses, coaching days, a junior racing programme and a full club racing programme where young sailors can take part too. We have regular BBQs and social evenings after sailing and cater for all levels of ability from beginner to experienced racer. The emphasis is on fun and interaction as well as preparing sailors for racing and other ways to enjoy being afloat.

Quick Guide

  • Our Aim
Is to help our young members become better sailors, build friendships and have fun.
  • Start Sailing
Children can start as early as eight years old though some do start younger. We suggest beginners sign up for our RYA training courses or Cadet Week then join us for all other activities.
  • RYA Training
RYA qualifications are an essential part of learning core sailing skills from beginner to advanced racing and the club offers various courses for our juniors. See the Training section for more info.
  • Cadet Coaching
Cadet Coaching days are about putting the learning from RYA Training into practice to get the most from the sport. We provide around ten days of free coaching each season, run by qualified coaches & instructors to provide a full day of supervised sailing activity.
  • Supervised Sailing - Wed
Wednesday Evening sailing offers supervised sailing for competent sailors between 6-8pm. There are safety boats afloat so you may hire club boats if you would like. The aim is to offer a safe family sailing environment and an opportunity to enjoy the tranquil evening & BYO dinner together after. Dates are set on the calendar.
  • Supervised Sailing - Sat
Mimi will be organising Saturday Sailing on an adhoc basis - she'll let you know when they are happening so make sure you’re on her list! These days start from 11am and offer a safe environment to enjoy family time on the water together and good times ashore! We must stress this is not coaching - there will be safety boats afloat but no instruction. It's open to all but you should be a competent sailor. You are welcome to hire club boats to take part providing you had obtained Stage 1 certification - please see your membership pack on how to hire out club boats. For more details contact Mimi.
  • Junior Club Racing
Specifically aimed at children, we run junior only club racing called the Junior Points Series and Junior Trophy Races. We use the standard trapezoid 'square' / inner loop/ outer loop courses they are familiar with from the junior & youth racing circuit. Races tend to be quick 20-30 min long with a combined start for all classes of boats and are scored on a handicap system. During these races, coaches will be on hand to help those new to racing make it around the course ensuring its never too early or daunting to get started! There’s plenty of banter between the kids and always fun!
  • Club Racing
Every Sunday there is club racing which starts at 11.30am and is open to both adults & juniors. You simply need to come along, enter your details on the sign up sheet and go race! The course uses our club buoys and the committee boat will show the sequence of buoys to sail around. There are lake maps in the clubhouse to take with you to mark out your course and the safety boats will lend a hand in keeping juniors on the right track! Juniors start second with the adult General Handicap fleet but if there are enough juniors, they'll add a third start sequence just for them! It's all to play for as the scoring is on a handicap basis - meaning they use your lap time and handicap to score you accurately against faster boats and you may even win despite being one of the last around the course! Why not give it a go?
  • Winter Sailing
We’ve also got lots of experience from getting started through to racing at a high level so we can help you with all things from winter sailing, the right kit to buy, how to plan ahead, racing and applying for squads and so on.
  • Notices
We love to see our sailors making progress and are only too happy to help. Head to our noticeboard in the clubhouse to see how you can take advantage of everything on offer. There’s so much to get involved in – training, coaching and club racing; fun racing events around our region and the open racing circuit.
